New mother in suspected New York bomb-making den released on bail

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A New York woman arrested after bomb-making manuals, weapons and a highly explosive compound were found in her apartment was released on bail into a drug treatment facility on Tuesday.

Morgan Gliedman, 27, who along with her boyfriend, Aaron Greene, 31, was charged last week with weapons possessions, appeared in a New York courtroom to accept a bail package without saying a word.

The deal included: $150,000 bond, surrender of her passport, electronic monitoring and 30 days at an inpatient drug rehabilitation facility.

Her defense attorney, Gerald Shargel, whose previous criminal clients have included Mafia dons and mobsters, declined to discuss the case. Gliedman and Greene have struggled with heroin addiction, police said last week.

Gliedman, who gave birth to a baby girl soon after her arrest, appeared in court in a brown knit dress.

Her father, Paul Gliedman, director of radiology at New York's Beth Israel hospital, sat in court and smiled at his daughter as she returned from the judge's bench.

Dr. Gliedman told reporters after the hearing that his daughter is "doing as well as to be expected under the circumstances."

New York police received a tip about the weapons and potential explosives from someone who had been in the couple's apartment, a police official said. Gliedman was wanted on suspicion of credit card theft, the official said.

Authorities, executing a search warrant of the couple's Greenwich Village apartment, found bomb-making instructions, including a manual called "The Terrorist Encyclopedia", high-capacity rifle magazines, a flare launcher, two shotguns, and a plastic bottle containing seven grams of hexamethylene triperoxide diamine, or HMTD, court documents said.

Gliedman and Greene each were charged with two counts of criminal possession of a weapon - one charge for the explosives and a second charge for a shotgun police discovered.

Greene, who was arraigned last week, was denied bail and remains in custody.

Gliedman was also arraigned on Tuesday on an outstanding 2012 grand larceny charge. She was scheduled to appear in court again on January 29 on the weapons possession charges.

Most anticipated iOS games of 2013

We?re a week into 2013 and this is already shaping up to be a big year for gaming on iOS. A few of the developers behind these forthcoming games raised funds through successful Kickstarter campaigns. The rise of the crowd-funding service in 2012 also gave rise to a number of developers and games that might not otherwise have had the money to ever see the light of day. So here?s a handful of games that we should be seeing in 2013. These are the reasons you should be excited for gaming on your iPad or iPhone during the next 12 months.

Double Fine Adventure

The game that really blew the doors off Kickstarter last year was Double Fine?s relatively ambiguous project, Double Fine Adventure. We do know that it?s an adventure game, but the record-breaking project ? which raised more than $3.36 million ? mostly was sold on the pedigree Tim Schaeffer and Ron Gilbert, the project?s well-known and hilarious developers.

Schaeffer and Gilbert have received serious acclaim for their work on classic adventure games like The Secret of Monkey Island, and they have a pretty huge, excited fan base (hence the huge Kickstarter bankroll). With all the extra money it earned through Kickstarter, Double Fine promised fully-voiced, mobile versions of Double Fine Adventure. If you?re at all a fan of adventure titles, especially the old LucasArts ones from the 1990s, this should have you very, very excited.

R?publique

Another Kickstarter campaign that received a lot of attention, R?publique is a console-quality, graphically gorgeous game in the making. A stealth-slash-survival horror game, R?publique has players not controlling the protagonist, a woman named Hope, but instead hacking into cameras and electronic systems to help her progress. It?s an interesting concept, to say the least. Check out their video:

R?publique managed to raise more than $500,000 for its Kickstarter campaign, and while we don?t know a huge amount about the game just yet, we do know that it looks gorgeous. It seems like an ambitious project for developer Camouflaj and I can?t wait to see how it turns out. In fact, I backed it on Kickstarter.

Infinity Blade Dungeons

The next installment in the hugely popular Infinity Blade series is called ?Dungeons,? and it sounds like a fundamental rework of the gameplay we?ve seen in the first two titles. That could be a good thing ? as fun as Infinity Blade and Infinity Blade II are, a third, identical installment might make them a bit stale. In any case, ChAIR?s Unreal Engine games for the iPhone and iPad have basically defined mobile gaming up to now and have really showcased what that hardware is capable of, so there?s no lack of excitement over what?s coming up next.

So far, it seems that Infinity Blade Dungeons will be a lot like top-down role-playing titles such as Diablo, and if anything, that should greatly expand the gameplay and capabilities of players. After all, you can?t even walk around in the first two games, so the opportunity to explore Infinity Blade?s lush environments is a welcome one. Hopefully ChAIR isn?t straying too far from the tight combat formula that made the games such hits.

Star Command

One of my favorite PC games of 2012 was an indie title called FTL: Faster Than Light. The game has players commanding a starship from evil forces, but the gameplay involves jumping from location to location and interacting with other ships, dealing with meteor showers, and so on. Players issue orders to a group of crewmen, as well as operate the ship?s weaponry and maintain its defensive shields.

Star Command looks a lot like FTL and seems to play similarly, too. Perhaps there will be a greater emphasis on the game?s narrative. Players command a ship in a sort of Game Dev Story-style simulation game, but you?ll also be sending crewmembers to halt hostile invasions while you battle other ships. If the game manages to capture the feel of titles like Game Dev Story and FTL, it will be a great addition to the simulation genre.

Year Walk

Last year, developer Simogo released Beat Sneak Bandit, a title that was among 2012?s best (if not the best). They also developed the charming Bumpy Road, and with a pedigree like that, the developer?s next title should be on everyone?s radar. That game is Year Walk, and it sounds strange and delightful. Trailers for the game show a trippy, possibly even frightening experience. See for yourself:

The game?s website features a screenshot of a horse in a pond, wearing a suit. With dead eyes. I?m excited about the possibilities. Year Walk is a side-scrolling adventure title set in 19th century Sweden, it concerns things like the occult and alternate dimensions, and it has a great art style.

Of course, there are more great iOS titles on the way not mentioned here, and the great thing about mobile gaming is that there are a lot of surprise hits that will surely land in the iTunes App Store this year.

Howard, Gasol, Hill all sidelined for Lakers

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) ? Dwight Howard, Pau Gasol and Jordan Hill all will miss the Los Angeles Lakers' upcoming road trip with injuries, leaving the struggling club without its top three big men.

Howard has a torn labrum in his right shoulder, and Gasol has a concussion after taking an elbow in the face late in Sunday night's loss to Denver. Hill, a key backup to both starting big men, has a right hip injury.

The three injuries are the latest blows for the Lakers (15-18), who still haven't meshed despite a star-studded roster, a bulging payroll and an early-season coaching change. Los Angeles has lost three straight and four of five since beating the Knicks on Christmas, falling to 11th place in the Western Conference.

"The NBA is unforgiving, and nobody is feeling sorry for us," Los Angeles coach Mike D'Antoni said. "There's 29 other teams that are happy, and we've got to do the best we can do. It's kind of weird coming to work thinking you have three centers, and all three of them are hurt."

The Lakers' biggest concern is Howard, who hurt his shoulder in last Friday's loss to the Clippers and aggravated it in Sunday's loss to the Nuggets while grabbing a career-high 26 rebounds. The six-time All-Star center said he won't need surgery, but he'll sit out for at least a week before his injury is re-evaluated.

"It depends on how fast I heal up," Howard said. "I was in pain (Sunday night), and the biggest thing right now is I have to make sure I'm 100 percent. I don't want to play with my shoulder weak. I'd have a chance for more injuries. I've got to let it heal up."

The Lakers said Gasol and Howard are both out indefinitely. Hill will be examined by team doctors later Monday before getting a prognosis.

When the Lakers open a stretch of four games in six days starting Tuesday in Houston, Robert Sacre is likely to be their starting center. The final pick in last June's draft has been playing for the Lakers' affiliate in the D-League.

D'Antoni will be forced to improvise with his top three post players sidelined from an already top-heavy roster. The coach said 6-foot-7 Metta World Peace could play center at times as part of a small lineup he'll be forced to use.

"We'll have little guys guarding big guys who will have to be quick," D'Antoni said.

The Lakers haven't been fully healthy for any significant stretch of the season. After Howard missed their first five preseason games while recovering from offseason back surgery, new point guard Steve Nash got a small fracture in his leg in their second game of the season, keeping the two-time NBA MVP out for seven weeks.

NBA scoring leader Kobe Bryant also has struggled through a foot injury and other minor problems.

Chicago lottery winner died from cyanide poisoning

(AP Photo/Illinois Lottery)

(AP) ? With no signs of trauma and nothing to raise suspicions, the sudden death of a Chicago man just as he was about to collect nearly $425,000 in lottery winnings was initially ruled a result of natural causes.

Nearly six months later, authorities have a mystery on their hands after medical examiners, responding to a relative's pleas, did an expanded screening and determined that Urooj Khan, 46, died shortly after ingesting a lethal dose of cyanide. The finding has triggered a homicide investigation, the Chicago Police Department said Monday.

"It's pretty unusual," said Cook County Medical Examiner Stephen Cina, commenting on the rarity of cyanide poisonings. "I've had one, maybe two cases out of 4,500 autopsies I've done."

In June, Khan, who owned a number of dry cleaners, stopped in at a 7-Eleven near his home in the West Rogers Park neighborhood on the city's North Side and bought a ticket for an instant lottery game.

Ashur Oshana, the convenience store clerk, told The Associated Press on Monday that Khan said he had sworn off gambling after returning from the hajj, a Muslim pilgrimage, in Saudi Arabia. Khan said he wanted to lead a better life, Oshana said, but Khan bought the tickets that day and scratched off the winner in the store.

"Right away he grabbed my hand," Oshana said. "He kissed my hand and kissed my head and gave me $100. He was really happy."

Khan recalled days later at an Illinois Lottery ceremony in which he was presented with an oversized check that he jumped up and down in the store and repeatedly shouted, "I hit a million!"

"Winning the lottery means everything to me," he said at the June 26 ceremony, also attended by his wife, Shabana Ansari; their daughter, Jasmeen Khan; and several friends. He said he would put some of his winnings into his businesses and donate some to a children's hospital.

Instead of the full $1 million over installments, Khan opted to take his winnings in a lump sum of just over $600,000. After taxes, the winnings amounted to about $425,000, said lottery spokesman Mike Lang. The check was issued from the state Comptroller's Office on July 19, the day before Khan died, but was cashed on Aug. 15, Lang said. If a lottery winner dies, the money typically goes to his or her estate, Lang said.

Khan was pronounced dead July 20 at a hospital, but Cina would not say where Khan was when he fell ill, citing the ongoing investigation.

No signs of trauma were found on Khan's body during an external exam and no autopsy was done because, at the time, the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office didn't generally perform them on those 45 and older unless the death was suspicious, Cina said. The cutoff age has since been raised to age 50.

A basic toxicology screening for opiates, cocaine and carbon monoxide came back negative, and the death was ruled a result of the narrowing and hardening of coronary arteries.

Cyanide can get into the body by being inhaled, swallowed or injected. Deborah Blum, an expert on poisons who has written about the detectives who pioneered forensic toxicology, said the use of cyanide in killings has become rare in part because it is difficult to obtain and normally easy to detect, often leaving blue splotches on a victim's skin.

"The thing about it is that it's not one of those poisons that's tasteless," Blum said. "It has a really strong, bitter taste, so you would know you had swallowed something bad if you had swallowed cyanide. But if you had a high enough dose it wouldn't matter, because ... a good lethal does will take you out in less than five minutes."

Only a small amount of fine, white cyanide powder can be deadly, she said, as it disrupts the ability of cells to transport oxygen around the body, causing a convulsive, violent death.

"It essentially kills you in this explosion of cell death," she said. "You feel like you're suffocating."

A relative came forward days after the initial cause of death was released and asked authorities to look into the case further, Cina said. He refused to identify the relative.

"She (the morgue worker) then reopened the case and did more expansive toxicology, including all the major drugs of use, all the common prescription drugs and also included I believe strychnine and cyanide in there just in case something came up," Cina said. "And in fact cyanide came up in this case."

The full results came back in November. Chicago Police Department spokeswoman Melissa Stratton confirmed the department was now investigating the death and said detectives were working closely with the Medical Examiner's Office.

Investigators will likely exhume the body, Cina said.

Calls to Khan's family went unanswered Monday. A knock on the door at the family's small, two-story house late Monday afternoon wasn't answered.
