As far as fun family games go, Spontuneous is a chart-topper. We were anxious to test this one out and so the other night as a break from homework, we cracked it open and took Spontuneous for a spin. Now, my first caveat is that this game is intended for age nine and up. I have an eight-year-old and it was a stretch for her to figure this one out. But here's what I loved about this game. Spontuneous is unique. It's one part Trivial Pursuit and two parts Pictureka. It is a fun and light-hearted game, not a racing competitive game that can alienate kids who don't like competition, but a more creative fun enjoyable treat. You hardly know you are playing a game in some ways, if that makes sense. The emphasis is on the creativity and not the end result. Spontuneous will appeal to all ages over nine. I plan to take it to my Mom's retirement home later this month so she and some friends can enjoy it. It appeals to the nostalgia part of your brain where you attach little snippets of soundtrack to fond memories from the past. I found Spontuneous easy to play and fairly quick. My children love games and we have dozens here. My youngest struggled to do the printing of the words that is required (so I do recommend following the age guide.) But my tween, who sings and dances in a local acting troupe, was crazy in love with this one and as soon as she understood the fact that the first person to sing the lyric with the key word that triggers play wins the round, well she was off to the races. She rapidly trounced the rest of us and had a chance to be a bit silly, blow off some steam and exercise her strange propensity for rapid recall of lyrics. This is the same child who hates games that are based on the roll the dice and take a gamble, then move your player around the board model. She also hates laborious card games or games with math. Spontuneous is fun and quick. We played the whole game in about 45 minutes maximum, so it doesn't seem onerous or overly difficult for the kids. This could be a fun party game and, as I said, seniors will love it.

Recently, Spontuneous won the seal of approval so many moms and dads trust. It's now a Parent Tested Parent Approved Winner. That means this game was put through intense scrutiny by several reviewers. Our family was one of them.

At start of game you write down five key words that may be included in lyrics of a song. Now it doesn't take a genius to figure out that if you write a word like Summer as one of your Hit List Trigger Words, then you should easily be able to find a song under pressure to sing when it comes to be your turn. You start with five key trigger words and begin with the Tune-smith. They state one of the words, for instance - Brown, then flip the timer and everyone competes for who is first to sing a song that contains at least five correct words from a song with that word in it. So for Brown I naturally started singing My Brown-Eyed girl and that was an easy win. It was one of the few rounds I won. My kids were a little slow at first because they are used to turn taking at game time and here you all have to break into song at once, or the first one with the song wins. Then the person that wins their round rolls the dice and moves on the board. When you reach the end of the game board you win.

Spontuneous is intended for anyone over the age of nine. You can play with 4-10 players. It was a 2011 Dr. Toy Best Vacation Products Winner and a 2011 Creative Child Magazine Winner and I can see why. I like the cooperative spirit and the creativity involved here. I love that this is one I can honestly give to my Mom and her friends in the retirement home where she lives. We give Spontuneous a standing ovation.
