Registration is under way for a luncheon presentation featuring the chief economist of a national construction industry trade group.

Anriban Basu, chief economist of Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) will discuss his outlook for the construction industry on both national and regional levels as well as answer questions at the event.

The Western Colorado Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors has scheduled the luncheon for noon March 23 at the Fruita Recreation Center, 324 N. Coulson St. Admission is $18 for ABC members, $32 for others. To register or obtain more information, call 243-7950 or send an email to admin@abcwesterncolorado.org.

ABC representations more than 22,000 construction and construction-related firms nationwide. The Western Colorado Chapter represents firms on the Western Slope.

Christine Sartoris, president and chief executive officer of the Western Colorado Chapter of ABC, said the luncheon will offer a unique opportunity to find out what various indicators say about current and projected conditions in the construction industry.

?From her own perspective, Sartoris said business conditions on the Western Slope remain difficult with low profit margins, particularly for subcontractors who are bidding low to get work. ?It?s still pretty rough out there, and 2012 is going to be another rough year,? she said.

In addition to his role with ABC, Basu serves as chairman and chief executive officer of Sage Policy Group, an economic policy and consulting firm based in Baltimore. Basu created the Construction Industry Backlog, a measure of future construction activity based on the amount of nonresidential construction work under contract.

Basu holds a bachelor?s degree in foreign service from Georgetown University, a master?s degree in public policy from the Harvard University John F. Kennedy School of Government and a master?s degree in economics as well as law degree from the University of Maryland.
